National Fitness Day (18 September) is a fantastic opportunity each year for everyone to get active and improve their health. This year for Barnet’s Health Champions and Age Friendly Champions, it was a chance to learn about GLL’s Healthwise programmes and how physical activity can support wellbeing.

Introducing Better Balance to Barnet’s Champions

Five Health Champions and 4 Age Friendly Champions came along to the day, and took part in the opportunity to have a go at a GLL’s Healthwise Better Balance session, which helps prevent falls, learn about local wellbeing services, and socialise and build connections with each other.

Lola, one of our Age Friendly Champions, shared her thoughts:

“The session made me aware of how easily people can fall and how improving balance helps. It was very motivating, and I’m now able to tell others who might not know where to get support. It’s about helping people find the right place and getting them the help they need.”

Raising awareness among Barnet’s ageing population

By participating in these sessions, our champions are now better equipped to raise awareness within their communities about the importance of physical activity and preventing falls. Lola added, “I’m happy to be part of this team. It’s such a friendly, encouraging group, and I’ve learned so much about helping others.”
