This World Stroke Day (29 Oct), we are supporting the 6,191 stroke survivors living in Barnet and raising awareness of the practical steps we can all take to reduce our risk of stroke and other serious health conditions.

Support for stroke survivors

A stroke can happen to anyone and can have a life-changing impact on individuals, families and communities. While recovery can be a long journey, support is available.

The Stroke Association offers free information, guidance and emotional support to people affected by stroke. Their Stroke Support Helpline can provide advice on recovery, local services, benefits, social care and emotional wellbeing.

Preventing stroke in Barnet

Around half of all heart attacks and strokes are linked to high blood pressure. Often called a ‘silent killer’, high blood pressure usually has no symptoms, so many people do not realise they have it until serious health problems develop.

Check your blood pressure – it is quick, easy and one of the most effective ways to protect your health.

  • If you're aged 40 to 74, you may be eligible for a free NHS Health Check through your GP. The check looks at your blood pressure, cholesterol, weight and other risk factors to help identify your risk of developing conditions such as stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes and kidney disease. Contact your GP to make an appointment.
  • Free blood pressure checks are also available at community pharmacies across Barnet. No need for an appointment, just pop in. It only takes a few minutes and could help identify risks before they become serious health problems.

Reduce your risk by making some healthy changes

There are several lifestyle changes that can significantly reduce your risk of stroke and help to keep your heart and blood vessels healthy.

Explore our pages to find support to eat well, maintain a healthy weight, move more, stop smoking, and drink less alcohol.

This World Stroke Day, take a moment to learn your numbers, check your blood pressure and encourage friends and family to do the same.
