Damp and mould and our health: top tips
As the cooler weather arrives, condensation is more likely, which can lead to damp and mould growth in our homes. Dampness, mould, and condensation can cause not only damage to our home, but also to our health.
Living with damp and mould makes us more likely to develop respiratory problems, respiratory infections, allergies or asthma. It can also lead to poor mental health due to worries and anxiety about living with damp and mould.
Know the symptoms of poor health due to living with damp and mould:
- Coughing (in cases of aspergillosis you may cough blood or lumps of mucus)
- wheezing, shortness of breath
- Weight loss
- High temperature
- Nasal congestion, runny nose, sneezing and itching
The more serious the damp and mould problem and the longer it is left untreated, the worse it can be for our health. Living with damp and mould can also lead to worries and anxiety, and affect our mental health.
The good news is there are simple steps we can take to minimise damp and mould. Some simple tips include:
- Drying clothes outside if possible
- Opening windows after having a shower
- Wiping condensation from windows and sills
- Closing doors when cooking or showering
- Putting lids on pans when boiling foods
