World suicide prevention day 2026: Changing the narrative on suicide

Every year on 10 September, World Suicide Prevention Day highlights the importance of suicide prevention and the role we can all play in supporting one another. This year's theme, Changing the Narrative on Suicide, encourages us to move away from silence and stigma and towards openness, empathy and understanding.

Talking about suicide can feel difficult, but compassionate conversations can help people feel less alone. By checking in with family, friends, neighbours or colleagues, listening without judgement and encouraging people to seek support when they need it, we can help create a culture where everyone feels able to reach out.

Locally, Barnet residents are invited to take part in the Walk for Hope on Tuesday 22 September 2026 at Montrose Park HA8 0DD, bringing the community together to support mental health, wellbeing and the power of connection. The event includes an accessible group walk and opportunities to talk with volunteers who can offer support, advice and signposting to local services.

Changing the narrative is about recognising that suicide prevention is everyone's business. Together, through conversation, connection and community action, we can help ensure that everyone feels valued and supported.
