World Alzheimer’s Day: Building a dementia-friendly Barnet
This year, the 21st of September marks World Alzheimer’s Day - a global opportunity to raise awareness and challenge the stigma surrounding Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia. It’s a time to reflect on how we, as a community, can better support those affected.
With a growing older population, and more than 4,300 people living with dementia in Barnet, the need for inclusive and supportive environments has never been more urgent. Dementia affects not only individuals but also families, carers, and entire communities.
That’s why Barnet is committed to becoming a dementia-friendly borough. This means working together to ensure that people living with dementia feel understood, respected, and able to live well. From training staff and volunteers to improving accessibility in public spaces, every action contributes to a more compassionate and inclusive Barnet.
World Alzheimer’s Day reminds us that small changes can make a big difference. Whether it’s learning more about dementia, showing patience in everyday interactions, or supporting local initiatives, we all have a role to play.
Let’s continue to build a dementia-friendly Barnet where everyone, regardless of diagnosis, feels valued and supported.
