Stay safe and enjoy the summer
Summer is a great time to get outdoors, enjoy days out and go on holidays. But warmer weather can also bring additional risks. Taking a few simple precautions can help keep you, your family and your friends safe.
Stay safe around water
Whether you're visiting the coast, a lake, river or swimming pool, always think about water safety. Choose beaches and swimming areas which are supervised by lifeguards (where possible), check local safety signs and conditions, and avoid using inflatables in open water as these can quickly be blown away by wind and strong currents. Never swim alone and make sure someone knows where you are. If you get into difficulty, remain calm, float on your back and call for help.
Also, don’t forget about your little ones, always watch babies and young children when they are in or around water, including baths, paddling pools, and garden ponds. Drowning can happen silently and quickly, even in just a few centimetres of water.

Travel smart
Before you travel, get travel health advice at least eight weeks before you leave. Make sure routine vaccinations such as MMR are up to date, and check whether you need extra travel vaccines for your destination. Pack enough of any regular medication you take, along with essential supplies such as sunscreen, hand sanitiser and insect repellent.
When travelling abroad, take care with food and drinking water, wash your hands regularly and protect yourself from insect bites. A little preparation can help you avoid common travel-related illnesses and make the most of your holiday.

Take care in hot weather
High summer temperatures can increase the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion and sunburn. Drink plenty of water throughout the day, wear light clothing, use sunscreen, and find shade during the hottest hours, typically between 11am and 3pm.
Keep homes well-ventilated where possible, close curtains in rooms exposed to direct sunlight, and check on older relatives, neighbours and anyone who may be more vulnerable to heat. If you’re spending a long time outdoors, take regular breaks in cool or shaded areas.

Don't overlook window safety
Open windows can help keep homes cool, but they can also create a safety risk for young children. Keep furniture away from windows to prevent climbing, ensure window restrictors are fitted and working correctly, and never rely on insect screens to prevent falls.
Remember to always supervise young children around open windows and balconies, and make regular checks to ensure safety devices remain secure and in good condition.
