Recovery month 2026: – challenging stigma, celebrating community and inspiring hope
This September, Barnet proudly joined communities across the country in celebrating Recovery Month, recognising the strength, determination and achievements of people recovering from drug and alcohol dependency. The month was an opportunity to challenge stigma, share uplifting stories of recovery and highlight the support available to help people live healthier, happier lives.
Recovery Month began with a fantastic launch event at the Meritage Centre Wellbeing Hub, bringing together local organisations including Change Grow Live (CGL), Andy's Man Club, GamCare, Barnet BOOST and Barnet Council Public Health services. The event showcased the power of partnership working, with services coming together to inspire hope, raise awareness and celebrate recovery in all its forms.
One of the month's highlights was the annual screening of films from the national Recovery Street Film Festival, at the iconic Phoenix Cinema, Finchley. Powerful amateur films shared moving stories of resilience, change and recovery, while shining a spotlight on CGL's newly formed Barnet Film Club. Barnet Film Club members had an incredible 4 films included on the shortlist of 19. A special congratulations goes to CGL clients Chris and Lena, whose films were recognised among the festival's top three entries. All the shortlisted films can be watched here: Previous Entries — Recovery Street Film Festival.
The month concluded with the Walk for Hope and Recovery Month Walk and Talk, bringing residents, volunteers and local organisations together in support of mental health, wellbeing and connection. These community events helped raise awareness of support available in the borough, spark conversations and remind people that no one has to face challenges alone.
