Keeping warm and well this winter

As the cold weather sets in, it's important to be warm and healthy.

Exposure to low temperatures can increase the risk of serious health issues such as heart attacks, strokes, and pneumonia. You can help to protect yourself and others by taking a few simple steps at home. Visit the council’s website and Energy Saving Trust for advice on how to reduce heating costs and to make sure your appliances are safe.

Planning ahead is also vital. Ensure you have enough food and medicine to last you through any cold snaps. If you're struggling, there is support available at foodbanks in Barnet and through the Healthy Start scheme. Inside your home, try to keep rooms heated to at least 18°C, wear layers to trap warmth, and use draft excluders to keep the cold out.

Cold weather can increase the temptation to over-bundle babies to keep them warm, but this can be dangerous. To reduce the risk of sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS), keep your baby’s room between 16-20°C, always place them on their back to sleep, and use a firm, flat mattress in a clear cot. Avoid surrounding them with pillows and loose bedding, to avoid overheating. Learn more about safer sleeping for babies with the Royal Free London and the Lullaby Trust.

Community care is also crucial. Check in on neighbours, friends, and family members who might be vulnerable and, if you see someone sleeping rough, notify Streetlink so help can be given. People can also visit one of several Warm Spaces in Barnet which are welcoming community hubs where they can stay warm and connect with others.
