It’s best to test for HIV
Why take an HIV test? In simple terms, if you know your HIV status, the sooner you can get treatment if you need it.
It is now so effective that people having HIV treatment achieve an undetectable viral load, which means there is no more risk of transmission and you can live a long and healthy life.
Most people get a negative result but, whatever happens, it is important to know that there are prevention options like PrEP, and that anyone living with HIV in the UK can access free treatment and support.
This week is HIV Testing Week (9 to 15 February 2026), and the aim is to get as many people as possible in Barnet to take a test.
It is free, fast, easy and confidential – you can get tested at your GP, at your local sexual health clinic or by ordering a test online and taking it at home. HIV testing kits can also be ordered elsewhere online by visiting Sexual Health London • SHL.UK.
Councillor Alison Moore, Barnet Council’s Cabinet Member for Adult Social Care and Health and Chair of Barnet Health and Wellbeing Board, said: “Early detection of HIV means that people can begin treatment sooner and that transmission to others can be prevented. With more testing, the stigma can be removed and more residents can be supported to lead longer, happier and healthier lives.
“If you haven’t had a test before, or your previous one was more than six months ago, this HIV Testing Week is the perfect opportunity to do that right now. An HIV test can feel scary for some people but knowing your status and that you’re able to access treatment as a result will put you in control of your health.”
