Last Friday (20th June 2025), Brent Cross Shopping Centre became a hub of health awareness, as residents, shoppers and families attended the event hosted by Barnet Council’s Public Health Live and Age Well team.

With 1 in 10 people in Barnet at risk of developing type 2 diabetes, the event focused on raising awareness about the risks of type 2 diabetes and encouraging residents and visitors to take simple steps to improve their health.

The event was in partnership with local and national organisations such as Diabetes UK, Central London Community Healthcare NHS Trust, GLL BETTER Leisure Centres, Age UK Barnet and the Healthy Heart Peer Support team. Guests included Past Mayor Councillor Tony Vourou, Councillor Alison Moore, Councillor Zahra Beg, along with Dr Janet Djomba, Barnet Council’s Director of Public Health.

Free “Know Your Risk” (KYR) assessments were offered on the day, which included blood pressure checks, weight measurements and brief healthy conversations. 95 people received a KYR score on the day, with 60 people being found to have a high or very high risk of developing type 2 diabetes over the next 10 years. Professionals were on hand to explain the results and provide personalised advice.

But the event wasn’t just about KYR scores; it was about starting conversations and raising awareness about the signs and symptoms of diabetes. It also highlighted how small changes to your lifestyle such as eating well, moving more, and managing stress can make a big difference in preventing type 2 diabetes.

Janet Addison, a Barnet resident, said, ‘This a fantastic event and I know a lot of the people in the community would welcome it. I am a very health-conscious person so getting myself checked, and being mindful about my health, can help me avoid life changing health conditions in the future.’

Children also enjoyed engaging arts and crafts activities at the play table, while all residents and visitors were treated to a stunning dance performance by the Edgware Dance Group.

If you missed the event, it’s not too late to take action. Here are some simple steps you can start today:

  • Eat a balanced diet - include more vegetables, whole grains and less sugar.
  • Stay active - aim for at least 30 minutes of movement most days.
  • Maintain healthy weight - and keep an eye on your blood pressure.
  • Avoid smoking - and limit your alcohol intake.
  • Look after your mental health - stress can affect your body in many ways.
