Creative Healing: Barnet’s Recovery Film Festival Screening shines bright
Barnet’s Phoenix Cinema, in East Finchley, hosted a truly inspiring evening to celebrate the transformative power of creativity in healing last Wednesday (24 September).
The Recovery Film Festival Screening event, with the theme ‘Creative Healing’, brought together community members, professionals, and those on recovery journeys for a night of film, conversation, and connection.
Held to mark Recovery Month, the event featured 10 poignant short films from Recovery Film Festival 2025 shortlisted films with each offering raw, honest portrayals of lived experiences. These stories highlighted that recovery is not only possible but can be deeply creative and empowering.
Following the screenings, there was a Q&A panel discussion featuring Maddie Kitchen, Creative Director of the Recovery Street Film Festival and Sobriety Films alongside art directors and practitioners: Sam D’Cruze ,Nicole Hollinshead and Ronan MacManus. Their reflections sparked meaningful dialogue, as well as provide depth and insight into the films while offering hope to many in the audience.
The event was praised by some of those there for its warmth, inclusivity, and emotional resonance. It provided a safe space for individuals and families affected by addiction to feel seen and supported, while also inviting the wider public to engage with recovery in a new light.
The evening was about more than the short films showcased; it was a celebration of resilience, storytelling, and the healing potential of art. A real testament to Barnet’s commitment to fostering understanding and compassion within its community.
